The 3DEP baseline of consistent, high-quality data will continue to grow in value as it is compared with new 3DEP data collections for change detection applications. Based on the 3D Nation Elevation Requirements and Benefits Study, the USGS designed the next generation of the program to provide increased quality levels and refresh rates with more flexibility to meet changing user needs. Inland topobathymetric lidar are being collected as part of the next generation of 3DEP. \nThe 3D Elevation Program is the logical result of the maturation of the long-standing USGS elevation mapping program, which for many years concentrated on production of topographic map quadrangle-based digital elevation models (DEMs). These seamless DEMs were referred to as the National Elevation Dataset (NED) from about 2000 through 2015 at which time they became the seamless DEM layers under the 3D Elevation Program and the NED name and system were retired.
